Retailer review
Clean Origin: the return window as the product
Thirty days is the industry standard, and as our returns comparison shows, it is shorter than it sounds — one retailer starts counting at shipment rather than delivery. Clean Origin's distinguishing term is a return window several times longer than that, which changes the risk of buying online more than any imaging feature does.
We earn a commission if you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It never changes what a policy says — see our methodology and full disclosure. We are not affiliated with any retailer reviewed here; all trademarks belong to their owners.
Check live prices — we don't print them here, because they change daily.
Rings
The centre stone is where nearly all the money goes. Compare the same specification at each — shape, carat, colour, clarity, cut grade and grading laboratory held identical, or you are not comparing anything.
Earrings
Sold by total carat weight across the pair, so a 1ct pair is two half-carat stones. Cheap enough to make a sensible first purchase from a retailer you have not used before.
Bracelets
Check the clasp and the safety catch before the stone quality. A tennis bracelet that springs open on the wrist is the most common way people lose one.
Necklaces
The chain matters more than buyers expect. Check the gauge and the clasp — a heavy pendant on a thin chain is a repair waiting to happen.
Links open each retailer's own category page. Rare Carat links are affiliate links and earn us a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. The others are plain links that earn us nothing today. If that changes, this line changes with it. Every relationship is listed on the disclosure page.
Holds up
- A return window far longer than the thirty-day category standard
- Lab-grown only — no natural range whose margins need protecting
- Founded by a family with generations in the diamond trade
- IGI certification with the report accessible before purchase
Does not
- Lab-grown only, so no natural option if you change your mind
- Independent and relatively young, which matters for a lifetime warranty
- A long window is only useful if the exclusions do not swallow it — read them
- Lab-grown resale is poor and falling, whoever you buy from
Why a long return window is worth more than it looks
Every online diamond retailer asks you to commit to something you have only seen on a screen. The industry's answers have been better photography, home previews, and local hand-offs.
Clean Origin's answer is time.
That deserves more credit than it usually gets, because a return window is the only feature on this list that protects you against everything at once — the stone disappointing in person, the design not suiting the hand, the size being wrong, or simply changing your mind. Imaging solves one of those. Time solves all of them.
And as our returns comparison shows, the standard thirty days is shorter in practice than in the marketing. One major retailer counts from the shipment date rather than delivery, so transit eats the window before the box arrives. Another caps free returns at two per customer per year.
Read the exclusions before you rely on the number
A long window is only as good as what it excludes. Across every retailer we have read, the pattern is consistent: engraving, resizing and custom work are where the return right disappears, and the decision to engrave is made at checkout in a box that feels like a nice touch.
Check specifically whether the long window survives engraving and resizing here. If it does, that is genuinely unusual. If it does not, the headline number applies to a narrower set of purchases than you assumed.
Lab-grown only, and what that does
No natural inventory means no natural margins to protect, and it tends to show in lab-grown pricing. That is the same structural argument that applies to Grown Brilliance, and it is a real one.
The counterweight is the same too. Our lab-grown price guide covers it: prices keep falling, resale is poor, and any upgrade credit fixed at your original purchase price behaves differently in a falling market than a rising one.
Certification
Grading is principally through IGI, which handles the majority of lab-grown certification across the industry. That matters when comparing prices: as our certification guide explains, grades are comparable within a laboratory, not across them. Compare an IGI stone to an IGI stone.
Take the report number from any listing and check it against the laboratory's own database before paying. Two minutes, costs nothing, and almost nobody does it.
Who should buy here

If lab-grown is settled and what makes you hesitate is committing online, the return window is the most useful thing any retailer here offers you. If you have not settled lab against natural, a retailer carrying both leaves the decision open longer.
What this review is based on
We read Clean Origin's own published policies — returns, warranty, resizing, exclusions — and record the date. We explain how the business is structured and who owns it. Everything on this page can be checked against a primary source in a few minutes, and we link to them.
We do not buy from the retailers we write about, and we do not run price or imaging tests. So we do not tell you:
- How the ring looks in the hand against how it looked on screen
- How a return goes in practice, as against how it reads on paper
- Packaging, delivery, and whether promised dates hold
- Which retailer is cheaper on any given specification — check it live, it changes daily

Common questions
How long is Clean Origin's return window?
Substantially longer than the thirty days that is standard across this category — it is the term the company is known for. Confirm the current figure on their own site, and read the exclusions alongside it: across every retailer we have read, the exclusions decide real cases far more often than the headline number.
Is Clean Origin legit?
Yes. It sells lab-grown diamonds certified by independent laboratories, principally IGI, with the report available before purchase. The founders come from a family with generations in the diamond business.
Are Clean Origin diamonds real?
They are lab-grown diamonds: the same material as mined stones, graded on the same scales by the same laboratories. The difference is origin, and it is detectable only with instruments.
Clean Origin or Brilliant Earth for lab-grown?
Clean Origin carries no natural inventory, so it has no natural margins to protect and tends to price lab-grown more keenly. Brilliant Earth is older, larger, has showrooms, and charges accordingly. If price is the priority, the specialist usually wins; if longevity behind a warranty matters more, the established retailer does.
