Jared: Signet's third counter
Jared is Signet's upper mall brand — bigger stores, on-site workshops, larger stones. It is also the third of four Signet storefronts most buyers compare without knowing they belong to one company. Here is what the terms say and where Jared actually sits.
We earn a commission if you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It never changes what a policy says — see our methodology and full disclosure. We are not affiliated with any retailer reviewed here; all trademarks belong to their owners.
Check live prices — we don't print them here, because they change daily.
Rings
The centre stone is where nearly all the money goes. Compare the same specification at each — shape, carat, colour, clarity, cut grade and grading laboratory held identical, or you are not comparing anything.
Earrings
Sold by total carat weight across the pair, so a 1ct pair is two half-carat stones. Cheap enough to make a sensible first purchase from a retailer you have not used before.
Bracelets
Check the clasp and the safety catch before the stone quality. A tennis bracelet that springs open on the wrist is the most common way people lose one.
Necklaces
The chain matters more than buyers expect. Check the gauge and the clasp — a heavy pendant on a thin chain is a repair waiting to happen.
Links open each retailer's own category page. Rare Carat links are affiliate links and earn us a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. The others are plain links that earn us nothing today. If that changes, this line changes with it. Every relationship is listed on the disclosure page.
Holds up
- On-site workshops mean repairs and resizing without posting anything
- Larger stone selection than Kay or Zales carry in store
- Backed by the largest jewellery group in the US
- You see the actual piece before paying
Does not
- Positioned above Kay and Zales, and priced accordingly
- Same owner as Kay, Zales and Blue Nile — comparing them is not an independent check
- Appraisal is a paid service, which surprises people
- Selection is still a fraction of any online retailer's
Where Jared sits
Signet Jewelers owns Jared, Kay, Zales and Blue Nile, and until recently James Allen.
Within that group, Jared is the upper mall brand: larger stores, larger stones, and on-site workshops. Kay and Zales sit below it, and Blue Nile serves the online value buyer.
So the three mall counters people compare — see Zales vs Kay — are one company's three price points. Comparing them is worth doing, because the prices genuinely differ, but it is not the independent check most shoppers think it is.
The workshop is the real differentiator
Most chains send repairs away. Jared has workshops in stores.
That matters more than it sounds. As our warranty comparison sets out, having an outside jeweller touch a ring commonly voids the manufacturer's warranty — so service has to route back to the seller. Doing it on the premises removes the part everyone finds annoying: posting something valuable and waiting.
If a ring will be worn daily for decades, that is a genuine, recurring convenience rather than a one-off feature.
The appraisal question
People search for Jared's appraisal cost specifically, which suggests it surprises them: it is a paid service, not something included with the purchase.
Worth knowing what you actually need it for. For a newly purchased ring, the receipt and the grading report usually suffice for insurance. A full independent appraisal generally matters for inherited or older pieces. Our insurance guide covers when each applies — and there is an argument for not getting an appraisal from whoever is also selling to you.
The terms
Returns. A published window with exclusions for personalised and special-order items. Engraving is the industry-wide trap: decided at the counter, removes the right.
Resizing. Depends on the setting. Eternity bands generally cannot be resized at all.
Service plans. A separate paid product, not the warranty, and neither covers loss.
The check worth doing
Opens Jared's own site. We are not in their affiliate programme and earn nothing from this link.
Note the full specification of anything you like and price it at Blue Nile — same parent company, different storefront. Whatever the gap is, that is what the store, the workshop and the position above Kay are costing you. Then decide whether you want them.
What this review is based on
We read Jared's own published policies — returns, warranty, resizing, exclusions — and record the date. We explain how the business is structured and who owns it. Everything on this page can be checked against a primary source in a few minutes, and we link to them.
We do not buy from the retailers we write about, and we do not run price or imaging tests. So we do not tell you:
- In-store experience and workshop quality
- How a return goes in practice, as against how it reads on paper
- Repair turnaround
- Which retailer is cheaper on any given specification — check it live, it changes daily

Common questions
Is Jared a good jewelry store?
It is Signet's upper mall brand, with bigger stores and on-site workshops that most chains do not have. That workshop matters more than it sounds, because outside repairs commonly void a warranty. What you pay for it is mall pricing on a selection far narrower than online.
Is Jared owned by Kay Jewelers?
Neither owns the other. Signet Jewelers owns Jared, Kay, Zales and Blue Nile. Jared is positioned above Kay and Zales within that group, which is why the same company charges differently at each counter.
Is Jared jewelry good quality?
The stones are real and graded conventionally, and Jared carries larger sizes than its sibling brands. As with any chain, the question is whether the price matches the grade — checked by pricing the identical specification at an online retailer, including Blue Nile, which the same company owns.
How much does a Jared appraisal cost?
Appraisal is a paid service and pricing varies by location and piece. Worth knowing before you assume it is included. For insurance purposes a recent purchase receipt often suffices on a newly bought ring — our insurance guide covers when a full appraisal is actually needed.
What is Jared's return policy?
Jared publishes a return window with exclusions for personalised and special-order items, and separate terms for resizing. Read the current version — the exclusions decide real cases far more often than the headline window.
