The centre stone is where nearly all the money goes. Compare the same specification at each — shape, carat, colour, clarity, cut grade and grading laboratory held identical, or you are not comparing anything.
Earrings
Sold by total carat weight across the pair, so a 1ct pair is two half-carat stones. Cheap enough to make a sensible first purchase from a retailer you have not used before.
Bracelets
Check the clasp and the safety catch before the stone quality. A tennis bracelet that springs open on the wrist is the most common way people lose one.
Necklaces
The chain matters more than buyers expect. Check the gauge and the clasp — a heavy pendant on a thin chain is a repair waiting to happen.

The focus, and what it costs each of them
Grown Brilliance sells lab-grown and nothing else. Brilliant Earth sells both and positions lab-grown as a strong recommendation within a wider range.
That difference produces a fairly predictable pattern in both directions.
The specialist's advantage is that it has no natural inventory to price around and no reason to protect a natural range's margins. Everything it does — sourcing, imaging, settings, marketing — is aimed at one category.
The generalist's advantage is optionality and time in the market. If you have not finally settled the lab-versus-natural question, a retailer carrying both lets you compare properly and, on some programmes, trade up later. And Brilliant Earth has been trading since 2005 as a public company, where Grown Brilliance was founded in 2021.

The ethical framing, examined honestly
Both companies lead with sustainability language, and it means different things.
Brilliant Earth's position rests on traceability in mined supply chains, which is a genuine step past the industry baseline. That claim mostly concerns its natural stones. On lab-grown, the mining question does not arise for either retailer, and the argument collapses into a narrower one about energy.
Grown Brilliance's position is simpler by construction: no mining, because there is no mined inventory.
Neither addresses the part that actually varies. Growing diamonds is energy-intensive, how clean that energy is differs enormously between producers, and almost nobody discloses it — which our lab-grown guide covers in full. Treat "sustainable lab-grown" as a claim requiring evidence rather than a conclusion, at either retailer.
The thing neither will tell you
Lab-grown prices have fallen sharply and the direction has not obviously changed.
That is excellent news for a buyer today — more stone per dollar than a natural equivalent by a wide margin. It is poor news for anything you plan to resell or trade up, and the trade-up point deserves attention: a programme crediting your original purchase price behaves very differently in a falling market than a rising one.
